What will you be like when we gather together in person again?

You've heard of the Freshman 15, right? It's the 15 pounds that studies show are often gained by first year college students. So maybe you've heard of the Quarantine 15? Maybe you're experiencing it firsthand! Or maybe the Quarantine 20! Or maybe you've been very disciplined by walking several miles a day. We all will probably look physically different when we can finally see each other in person again.

I'm guessing most of us need haircuts? Anyone sporting a new unibrow? Those of us wearing gel nail polish have had a hard time either getting the stuff off, or keeping our nails somewhat trimmed and strong. Maybe we're getting acne from all the chocolate we've been eating. Maybe those in the health care profession have scars or bruises from the daily wear of protective masks. We will probably look physically different in several aspects when we meet again.

But what about internally? How have the experiences of these past months affected our mental, emotional and spiritual states? I'd like to think that when we see each other again there will be a marked increase in our appreciation for each other. That we will show compassion and grace to each other more than ever. I think we will be a little more grateful for the big things in life like a God who loves us, a Savior who died for us, and a promise of eternity with them both. We will be more grateful and aware of the common, ordinary parts of life that we so often take for granted: our family, a sunrise, a warm cup of tea, the happy wag of a dog's tail, a good night's sleep, and the opportunity to experience it all again if God grants us one more day. I pray that we will be a little less quick to judge and a little more willing to show grace and forgiveness. I pray that in this "in-between" time, we can cultivate wonder and awe, kindness, and empathy, so that when we are able to meet together, we will be changed for the better. Until we meet again...
